United Studio TechnologiesUT Twin87 Large-Diaphragm Multipattern FET Condenser Microphone

Product overview
About this model
Two generations of a classic studio microphone design come together in the United Studio Technologies UT Twin87 large-diaphragm multipattern FET condenser microphone. Inspired by the original and later versions of the renowned 87-style condenser, the UT Twin87 features selectable Vintage and Modern modes that reconfigure its analog circuitry and capsule polarization to reproduce two distinct sonic characteristics. Vintage mode delivers a warmer, softer response, while Modern mode offers greater sensitivity, extended high-frequency detail and a more forward presentation. A custom United K87 capsule, American-made output transformer and carefully selected electronic components form the foundation of its sound. With cardioid, omnidirectional and figure-8 polar patterns, a switchable RF filter and an integrated true-cardioid modification, the UT Twin87 gives engineers flexible options for recording vocals, acoustic instruments and other studio sources. Its combination of classic circuit designs and practical controls makes it a versatile choice for professional recording and voiceover applications. Vintage and Modern Circuits Offer Distinct Sonic Character The UT Twin87 goes beyond conventional voicing switches by reconfiguring its circuitry to reflect two generations of the original 87-style design. In Vintage mode, the capsule receives its polarization voltage directly from phantom power, while the high-impedance and de-emphasis circuits follow the component choices of earlier microphones. The result is a warmer, softer sound that can complement vocals and other sources requiring a more forgiving presentation. Modern mode uses an FET oscillator circuit to raise capsule polarization voltage, increasing sensitivity and producing a stronger signal. Its revised high-impedance and de-emphasis circuitry delivers a brighter, more articulate response with extended top-end detail. Switching between these modes allows engineers to select the character best suited to a performance without changing microphones. Custom K87 Capsule and American-Made Output Transformer At the heart of the UT Twin87 is a custom United K87-style capsule featuring a 34 mm brass assembly, insulated dual backplates and dual diaphragms made from 6-micron Japanese Mylar with 24k gold sputtering. The capsule supports the microphone's two operating modes through different polarization configurations, preserving the electrical distinctions between vintage and modern designs. Its output feeds a custom-wound United transformer manufactured in the United States with a large core and nickel laminations. Inspired by early German transformer designs, this component is engineered to maintain low-frequency response and headroom throughout the signal path. Selected transistors, capacitors and resistors further support the microphone's carefully developed analog circuitry, bringing together historically informed construction and contemporary component selection. Flexible Polar Patterns and Studio Recording Controls The UT Twin87 provides cardioid, omnidirectional and figure-8 pickup patterns for a variety of recording techniques, from focused vocal capture to room ambience and multi-microphone setups. In cardioid mode, an integrated true-cardioid modification disconnects the rear diaphragm from the pattern-selection circuitry, increasing sensitivity and improving the signal-to-noise ratio. A switchable RF filter lets engineers engage or bypass interference filtering independently of the Vintage and Modern circuit modes. The microphone also includes an 80Hz high-pass filter and -10dB pad for managing low-frequency buildup and higher sound-pressure levels. Powered by standard 48V phantom power and supplied with a suspension shockmount, the United Studio Technologies UT Twin87 FET condenser microphone offers adaptable recording options in a single studio microphone.
